Installing Trailer Wiring Connector on 2018 Subaru Impreza
Question:
Must you run the trailer lights all the way up to the battery or is hooking up to tail lights enough? Why must it be connected to car battery?

The T-One # 118744 installs on your 2018 Subaru Impreza by teeing into your vehicle wiring behind the turn signals. It receives power via the black wire that is routed to the battery on your Impreza. If you fail to connect the power wire then your trailer lights won't be able to draw enough power to function.
Some people also ask about connecting the power to a 12V source at the rear of the vehicle since a lot of newer vehicles have a 12V socket in the rear hatch area. While this seems like a good idea, the entire point of routing the power wire to the battery is so that the trailer wiring is completely separate from your expensive and intricate vehicle wiring. This way if something goes wrong with the trailer wiring your vehicle is protected. It's also worth noting that if you were to connect the power wire anywhere than at the battery, the extra draw of the trailer might exceed the max for that circuit.
I know it sounds like a pain but it's really the best thing for your vehicle. I have attached a helpful article on routing the power wire on a vehicle for you to reference.
