Are the 10-36 Trailer Grease Seals Rubber Encased Therefore Do Not Require Gasket Maker

Question:

I just ordered and received a set of seals for my Jayco 5th Wheel for re-packing the wheel bearings. My axle manual suggests applying a sealant Permatex high-temp RTV silicone gasket to the outside of the new seal. EXCEPT if the seals are rubber encased seals. Q: Is the RG06-070 considered a rubber encased seal??? Or do you feel there is no need to apply the sealant? Thank you much for the help.

Expert Reply:

The Trailer Grease Seal part # RG06-070 is not rubber coated according to the manufacturer, TruRyde. I have personally not heard of any gasket maker ever being needed to seal the hub but I also don't see how this could hurt either so it's really just up to what you prefer. The Loctite RTV 598 High-Performance Silicone Gasket Maker part # LT37467 would work if you do choose to use the gasket maker as recommended by the trailer manufacturer.
