Best 5th Wheel Hitch for 2019 Ram 3500 Short Bed with 8ft Wide 5th Wheel

Question:

Hi i have a 2019 ram3500 6.7 with the 5th wheel prep package. we are looking at several different 5th wheels. Im wondering if you could tell me if I go with the 18k Demco slider, how many inches will be between the truck and the cab if the trailer is 8 ft wide? i see the formula you show but since i dont have the hitch, I dont know the distance from the center of the jaw to the cab. I hope this kind of makes sense, lol. thank you

I checked with Demco and they were able to tell me that when you use the installation rails # DM6099 with the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 18k # DM8550035 on a 6-1/2 foot bed you will have 33" from the center of the king pin hole to the cab of the truck.

Using these measurements:
A: Distance from center of king pin hole to cab of truck = 33"
B: Distance of travel with sliding hitch = 14"
C: Width of trailer / 2 = 96"/2 = 48"

Normally you need to leave 4" of distance to safely turn your 5th wheel at close to 90 degrees. When you add everything up (A+B)-C= clearance we get (33+14)-48= -1; so you're not going to be able to make a 90 degree turn with the Demco if the 5th wheels are 96" wide- you would need a 5th wheel trailer 86" wide or smaller to make the Demco Hijacker Autoslide work.

All things considered, I recommend going with a standard 5th wheel hitch and a sliding pin box like the Reese Sidewinder # RP77FR which will give you 22" of clearance (where a sliding hitch will only provide 14"). You could pair this with the Reese # RP30928 and installation rails # RP30154 and have enough clearance for an 8ft wide 5th wheel trailer.

In order to determine which Sidewinder pin box will be compatible as a replacement for your current one, you'll need to find out what the part number on your current pin box by checking the tag on it. If you can't find the manufacturer info on the pin box, you can check out the help article I've linked that shows how to measure to find the correct size you'll need.
