Is Trailer Capacity Determined by GVWR or Axle Capacity

Question:

If I have a trailer with two 3500 lb axles and a total trailer weight of 7780lbs do I need to upgrade the axles or is sine of that weight reduced by the tongue being stretched to the towing vehicle?

That is a good question and your capacity is always determined by the lowest-rated component, but the tongue weight is going to be off the axles, so what you need to do is determine your trailer's fully loaded tongue weight (which can vary based on load placement) and if your GVWR minus the tongue weight is more than your axles, you will need to replace your two 3,500 lb axles.

In order to choose the correct replacement axle for your trailer you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center as in the diagram I have added; the other thing you need to know is the weight capacity of the axle you need, which should match or exceed the GVWR of your trailer.

You do have another option, the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System, which are simply bolted or welded so you do not have to worry about finding an axle that meets any specific measurements. I've added a link to our selection of axles and axle-less systems for you to check out as well.
