Best Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch For Clean Bed on 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 With or Without Puck System

Question:

I am looking to buy a 2020 Silverado 2500 with standard box, which I will use for towing a 5th wheel. Very few of them are shipping with the factory prep package, which is limiting my search. I do not have a hitch yet, but am leaning towards the Demco Autoslider, as I have heard very good reviews on it. If the factory prep was completed, I would be able to install this easily and quickly hitch and above bed bracket, and fully remove it when not needed, leaving me a clean, flat truck bed. However, since most trucks are not configured this way, can I install underbed brackets that will still be universal, similar to the OEM? By universal, I mean - while I think I want the Demco Autoslider, I might end up with a different hitch, and dont want to have an underbed system installed that is specific to just one hitch manufacturer. Again, I want to ensure that the truck bed can be free and clear of all hitching gear when not in use, and also not have something installed underbed that will only work with one specific hitch or manufacturer. I understand that addressing this aftermarket might cost a little more and take additional coordination/time. I would also like to have a gooseneck option, as I might occasionally tow a gooseneck trailer, if that matters.

These are really good questions and we can definitely set you up with the right 5th wheel hitch for your 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 short (also called standard) bed, but to quickly answer your question about underbed brackets, there aren't any that are universal (as nice as that would be), they are only designed to be used with specific 5th wheel hitches. That said, you do have a number of different options, which I'll list for you and then make my recommendation.

5th Wheel Hitch for 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 6-1/2 Foot Bed WITH Factory Prep Package:

- Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with Slider - 18,000 lbs # DM8550034 or 21,000 lbs # DM8550035 and Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Chevy/GMC OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package # DM6333
- B&W Companion OEM Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package # BWRVK3775

5th Wheel Hitch for 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 6-1/2 Foot Bed WITHOUT Factory Prep Package:

- B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3400-5W and Custom Underbed Installation Kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWGNRK1020-5W

With these options in mind, my strong recommendation would be the B&W Companion. You are absolutely right that the Demco Hijacker Autoslide is a great hitch, but the Companion is as well, and is often considered by many to be the best fifth wheel hitch in the industry. The reason is because of its thick 1 inch jaws (see photo) which make a total and secure connection to the kingpin, resulting in a smoother, quieter ride than you would get with a hitch that has a lesser jaw system.

There are two other key factors why the Companion is the best option for you. The first is that you emphasized a clean bed when not towing, which means removing the hitch. The problem with the Demco is that it is heavy - very heavy. The hitch is about 300 lbs and can't be easily taken apart, so removing it is an absolute chore. The Companion is not quite as heavy but still in the 270 lb range; however, the advantage with this hitch is that it is designed to be taken apart in two pieces. You can remove the head and then the base, and while these still require some elbow grease to get out of your truck (as will all hitches), it is much, much more manageable than the Demco.

The other thing you mentioned is that you might tow a gooseneck trailer, which makes the Companion perfect because the installation rails actually double as a Turnoverball gooseneck hitch, and like the Companion, this hitch is considered top of the line in the industry. So for those reasons I highly recommend going with the the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W with Installation Kit/Gooseneck # BWGNRK1020-5W if you don't have the prep package on your 2020 Silverado, or the B&W Companion # BWRVK3775 if you do have the prep package with the puck system.

I have added links to video reviews for you to check out as well.

The Demco Hijacker autosliding 5th wheel hitches actually have more to offer than the PullRite SuperGlide hitches in that they have a superior head system and have height adjustment as opposed to the PullRite that doesn't have height adjustment. I went ahead and attached a link to the various options you have (both above and below bed) for a 2020 Chevy 2500. These options are paired with the rail kit that you will need for your pickup.
