How Heavy of A Trailer Can I Buy To Tow With 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and we are looking to purchase a travel trailer for camping. It shows Jeep Grand Cherokee has a weight limit of 6,200 lbs - does that mean I can purchase a camper that weighs less than 6,200 lbs?

If your 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a 4x2 or 4x4 model with a 3.6L engine you can tow a 6,200 lb trailer. The 4x2 with 5.7L engine can tow 7,400 lbs and the 4x4 models with 5.7L engine can tow 7,200 lbs. Those figures are the gross trailer weight the vehicle can tow. Gross means the weight of the trailer plus all of the cargo inside so yo do not want to purchase a trailer with a dry weight of 6,200 lbs if your Jeep is rated for 6,200 lbs.

You would want to purchase a camper that weighs less then 6,200 lbs because you also do not want to exceed the gross vehicle weight rating, gross axle weight rating and gross combined weight rating of the Jeep. You will find these figures listed on a certification label affixed to the driver's side door pillar.

The gross vehicle weight rating is the total permissible weight of your vehicle, including the driver, passengers, vehicle itself, and cargo. The gross axle rating is the amount of weight allows on the front and rear axles of the Jeep. The cargo in the vehicle needs to be evenly distributed. For example: you do not want a lot of heavy luggage or cargo in the back of the Jeep compared to the front of the Jeep.

Another thing to keep in mind is the weight rating of the hitch you are towing with. If your hitch is a Class III hitch from the factory, you can tow 5,000 lbs with it. The aftermarket Draw-Tite for the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee (excluding diesel models) part # 75699 can tow 5,000 lbs so you have to be sure whichever camper you choose does not exceed your hitch weight capacity, gross vehicle weight rating, gross axle weight rating and trailer tow weight rating of the Jeep.
