Recommended Brake Controller for a 2020 Kia Telluride

Question:

I was reading the answer to the question about hooking the 7-round on the trailer to the four flat on the tow vehicle. It referenced asking for the specific make and model of the car if you needed a brake controller. what can you tell me about the new 2020 Kia telluride and what kind of brake controller I would need to get?

For your 2020 Kia Telluride you need to start off with the T-Connector Wiring # CU94FR which plugs into a connector under your vehicle on the driver's side.

Then for a brake controller I highly recommend using the Curt Echo # C51180 because you adjust the settings with your smart phone via Bluetooth and it can easily be stored in your glove box when not in use. Since this brake controller plugs into the 7-Way at the back of your Telluride you retain the OEM look on the inside of your vehicle. The only other wiring kit you need is part # ETBC7L which plugs into the T-One 4-Way and then you just have to route the black wire to your battery through the included circuit breaker.

If you don't already have a trailer hitch then I the Curt # C13420 is the best option for you because it features a hidden crosstube for a clean look, it is assembled in the USA, and it comes with a limited lifetime warranty. To mount your wiring to this trailer hitch you can use the Bracket # C58000.

To complete a towing setup you also need a ball mount kit. I recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900 because it includes two ball mounts, one with a 3/4” rise/2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise/4” drop, a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball, and a pin and clip. You will want to refer to the attached ball mount article to ensure that this kit is correct for your towing application.

I have also attached some written instructions for the trailer hitch and wiring that you can check out.

I don't need a brake controller but I do have a Boler trailer and would like to be able to charge the battery while we drive. Is the Kia wired for that, or do I have to run a wire from the battery terminal?

On the Kia you will still need to manually run that power wire. If you don't yet have a trailer connector, you'll still want to start with the 4-Way # 118784, followed by the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L. The Wiring Kit includes just what's necessary to get the 7-Way and activate that 12V pin for the charge line.
