Wiring Needed to Use the Curt Echo Brake Controller on a 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Question:

OK, need some specifics. Have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee with a 2000lb max tow capacity due to 4 cyl engine with hitch and 4 flat wiring harness installed. We will be using the jeep to tow/move the 16 ft dual axle car hauler trailer with brakes equipped with a 7 pin plug. Trailer weighs 1500 pounds unloaded. This trailer is only going to be moved by the Cherokee ONLY when empty. We are full time RV and we will need to be able to move or store the trailer off site, so it may have to travel at road speeds depending on how far the storage site is. We will need lights. The 30717 adapter would convert for that. Specifics: Plug 4 way into adapter and connect white ground to vehicle frame and done, or do I need to connect any other wires? To throw a curveball, I am not sure I would need brake control. I would like to have the option of using my Curt Echo if I find the trailer pushing too much on the Cherokee. Even empty and 500 pounds below max rating I am worried I might be pushing my Jeep too hard. Your thoughts? Thanks.

I'm glad to hear that you will only be towing your trailer with your 2015 Jeep Cherokee when it is empty. I was a little afraid that you were planning on hauling a car. Since the trailer weighs 500 lbs under the max towing capacity of your Cherokee you should be just fine traveling at highway speeds.

Since your trailer will have brakes it isn't a bad idea to go ahead and wire up your Cherokee so that you can use your Curt Echo # C51180. For this you just need the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L which includes an adapter similar to the # 30717 you referenced (except this gives you 4-Way and 7-Way connectors), wiring for the 12V power that the Echo requires, plus the circuit breaker and other connectors you need for the installation. So with this kit you not only get the benefit of having both styles of connectors but you are also able to use your Echo brake controller!

If you really wanted to you can use 10 Gauge Wiring # 10-1-1 with the 40A Circuit Breaker # PK54-140 and butt connectors/ring terminal connectors with the # 30717 if you don't mind using just the 7-Way.
