How to Carry Two Bikes While Flat Towing With Motorhome

Question:

We have a Swagman Traveler XC2 RV approved bike rack. We use this on our 2017 motor home to carry our bikes. This bike rack came with the straight receiver and is not high enough to clear the surge brake compartment on our tow dolly when we tow our car behind the motor home. Can we use this Swagman Bent Towing Receiver SP325 to replace the straight receiver that came with the Traveler XC2 bike rack? Thank you.

We definitely have a solution for you that will allow you to carry your two bikes though not the exact adapter you are asking about that already has a ball mount. The first option is to use a dual hitch adapter which does have the needed clearance between the top and bottom receivers, though you do need to ensure you get the one that has the correct rise or drop.

For that you can use the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter, 6" Drop/Rise # RM-077-6, 8" Drop/Rise # RM-077-8 or 10" Drop/Rise # RM-077-10, each of which have more than the 3-1/2" between the receivers you mentioned you needed. They are also compatible for tow dolly use and would allow you to carry your current Swagman rack.

I have the "Swagman Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack for 2" Hitch" and mount it on the back of my Jeep Wrangler 2" receiver when flat towing the Jeep with my motorhome. Due to partial tail/brake light obstruction, I would much rather have the dual hitch receiver like is mentioned above and put the bike rack behind the motorhome. The problem is, I have to have a 4" riser for the tow bar to be even with the higher Jeep. Using the dual hitch receiver would put the tow bar low. Is there a dual riser that will put the Jeep at 4" rise and then the bike rack higher than the 4" riser?

The only thing I know of that will allow you to do this is the Replacement Shank for Gen-Y Adjustable Ball Mount # 325-GH-305. This has a drop/rise of 10" and features 6 different 2" receivers for you to utilize.

@JonG Thanks Jon! I took measurements of my setup and think this will work perfectly. I ordered the Gen-Y shank.

That is a really good question so I reached out to Swagman to find out, but they told me you would not be able to use the Replacement Bent Towing Receiver for Swagman Traveler XCS # SP325 on your Swagman Traveler XC2 # S64663 because it is a different weld so the replacement receiver would not fit. That is really good thinking but to get that amount of rise the only option is the Swagman Traveler XCS 2-Bike Rack for 2" Ball Mount # S64664.
