Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to Trailer and Tow With 2010 Toyota Tacoma w/ Tow Package
Question:
I have a 1999 Jayco Heritage Manistee that Im planning on swapping out the Surge Brakes for electric. Ive already ordered a triflex next and the adapter to hook up to the truck. Im not quite sure what size brakes I need but Ive been looking at the Dexter Nev-r-adjust sets.... I have a 2010 Toyota Tacoma with the tow package so it has the 7 way already. To wire up the brakes on the trailer as well as the rewiring the 4 or 5 prong on the trailer Im thinking I need the Epicord 7-way Trailer Plug Item# 277-000141? Do I need to wire it up with 10 ga wire or can I use something close to that? I have spools of wire at home, just not sure what sizes. Ring Terminals and that stuff I can get... Am I missing anything else?

We have all the parts you need to install and use electric brakes on your 1999 Jayco and tow it with your 2010 Toyota Tacoma; since you already have a 4-flat and have the Curt TriFlex NEXT Trailer Brake Controller # C24VV and Wiring Adapter # C51362 you won't need anything else for your truck.
As for the size of your brakes, there are numerous models of a1999 Jayco Heritage Manistee so I was unable to confirm the exact size you need so you will need to measure the diameter and depth of your drum. If it measures 7" diameter x 1-1/4" wide you will need the 2,000 lb rated Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-2 and Mounting Hardware for 7" Brake Assemblies # BRKH7. These are not self-adjusting (there are no self-adjusting kits for brakes of that size) so you will also need Brake Adjustment Spoon for Drum Brakes # W80630
If your drum measures 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide you will need the 3,500 lb rated Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-468-469, which does come with mounting hardware. You will also need to add a breakaway kit, the Tekonsha Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger # 50-85-313.
For wiring, the etrailer 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box # e99011 would be perfect and the box is color coded like this:
- White (ground): 10 gauge
- Black (12V power): 10 gauge
- Yellow (reverse/auxiliary): 14 gauge
- Red (left turn and stop): 14 gauge
- Green (tail and running lights): 14 gauge
- Brown (right turn and stop): 14 gauge
- Blue (brake): 12 gauge
You will also need Ring Terminals # 44-5310A, Heat Shrink Butt Connector - 12-10 Gauge # DW05745-10, Heat Shrink Butt Connector - 16-14 Gauge # DW05744-10, ground screws # FA1131822 and Metal Loom Clamps # A0500.
