Flashing Red Signal With Curt Venturer Brake Controller

Question:

I have a 2002 dodge Dakota. With a curt venturer trailer break controller. I had my trailer inspected breaks on trailer work great on my buddies vehicle. But when I put it on my truck i dont think they are engaging . My controller blinks red when applying the brakes? The controller is brand new. Is there a way to check to make sure the truck is functioning properly if in fact the controller is working properly. Some sort of self test I can do? Thanks

If your Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller # C74VV is flashing red that means there is a short on the brake circuit of your 2002 Dodge Dakota. Since the controller is new and your trailer brakes work on your buddy's truck the problem is likely going to be corrosion in the 7-way of your '02 Dakota.

You can try and clean it or, assuming you have the factory 7-way, replace it with the Multi-Plug T-One Connector Assembly for 7-Way & 4 Pole Trailer Connector # 20135. It is also vital you use Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors # 11755 to prevent any type of corrosion in your connector.

Another step you can take is to bench test the controller with a separate 12 volt battery and Multimeter # PT89ZR to ensure the brake controller itself is not the problem.

I have also attached some help articles on testing and troubleshooting brake controllers for you to check out which I strongly recommend reading, which will help you curtail any potential issues in the future.
