Possible Causes For 5th Wheel Trailer Chucking and Movement During Starts and Stops

Question:

i have 20k reese M5 series and after hooking to trailer the trailer is sliding forward when you stop and backwards when you take off and it looks like the king pin is sliding in the jaws. the trailer is sliding on top of the 5th wheel plate. is there an adjustment for the jaws or is there another fix for this.

It sounds like there is one of two possible issues or a combination of issues. First, make sure that you are not high hitched. When connecting the king pin to the hitch, first make sure the head of the hitch is tilted towards the trailer. Then, make sure the bottom of the pin box (not the kingpin) on the trailer is 1/2 inch to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate.

The other issue could be that if your king pin of your PS30119 is worn significantly enough, there will be too much play and the trailer will chuck at starts and stops. The part that the jaws secure around should be 2 inches in diameter.

I recommend upgrading to the # RP30928 with its superior single jaw design.
