4-Way to 7-Way Adapter Recommendation for Installing Curt Echo Brake Controller

Question:

Other than the white ground on the Curt 57184 adaptor, do I need to use any of the remaining 3 wires black, yellow, and blue after plugging in the 4 pin connector in order for this Curt C51180 to control my trainers electric brakes? If yes, what ones and what to they connect to? I have a 08 Toyota Highlander and 10 Toyota Tacoma that we were planning on converting from 4 pin to 7-way and using this bluetooth brake controller to tow on either vehicle.

If your plan was to install a brake controller you'd have to also run the black wire of the 7-Way Adapter part # 30717 to the to the positive post of your vehicle battery as well as the ground you mentioned. The Curt Echo part # C51180 that you referenced needs the black wire to power it and then uses the other signals from the 4-way adapter to tell when the vehicle brakes are on.

For a different adapter that comes the extra wire and breaker to activate the needed circuit for the Curt Echo you'd want the part # ETBC7L instead. This kit was basically put together for brake controller installs like the Curt Echo that are wireless.

I have a 7 way plugged into my 4 way plug. Will the C51180 work as it's made to do?

The Curt Echo # C51180 will plug into your new 7-Way but you still need to activate the 12V circuit. You can do this by running some 10 gauge wiring # 10-1-1 from the 12V pin on the 7-Way up to the vehicle's positive battery post via a breaker like # 9510.
