Why Does the Factory Brake Controller Wiring Harness for a Toyota 4Runner Have Five Wires
Question:
I’ve purchased a Tekonsha P3 to use on my 2010 4Runner. I have the factory harness from Toyota and it has 5 wires and the P3 only has 4. Can you give me some guidance for how the connections need to be made? Thanks!

The reason your factory brake controller wiring harness has five wires is because one of them is for a backlight setting that is not needed on most brake controllers nowadays which includes the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195. Therefore, you will only need to make four connections. Unfortunately, I do not have schematics for the factory brake controller wiring harness that came with your 2016 Toyota 4Runner but for the Prodigy P3 the functions are as follows:
Black - 12 Volt Power
Red - Stop Light Switch
Blue - Brake Output
White - Ground
If the factory brake controller wiring harness did not have any labels for the wires then you can avoid having to find out what they are by using the Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers part # 3041-P which makes for a completely plug and play install. Otherwise you will need to contact the dealer.
