Should Both Axles Have Brakes on a Tandem Axle Trailer
Question:
I have a 16/2 foot dovetail flatbed trailer with brakes on one of the tandem axles , would I gain any stopping assistance by adding another set of brakes to the other axle , the existing brake is on the front axle , does Indiana require brakes on both axles , I dont know what the trailer weighs 1800 lbs , I have been told , its constructed of 5 inch steel channel with a wood deck and 15 inch wheels , 2 3500 lb axles thanks for any help

You would gain extra stopping assistance by adding brakes to your second axle on your tandem axle trailer. This will also help keep your original set of brakes from wearing down as quickly since wear and tear will be placed on the brakes for both axles instead of just one.
I am not quite sure of the laws for trailer brakes on tandem axle trailers so it would be best to contact your local or state law enforcement to get the current list of requirements. Personally I recommend putting brakes on all of the axles because your braking will be much more effective and it will give you a safer towing experience.
If you do in fact have 3,500 lb axles on your trailer then you can likely switch out your current hub for the hub and drum # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K and the brake kit # AKEBRK-35-SA for electric brakes or # AKFBBRK-35 for hydraulic brakes. Just be sure to verify that your current hub uses a # L68149 inner bearing, # L44649 outer bearing, and a grease seal that has a 1.719" inner diameter. If this matches your current setup then the parts mentioned above are a fit!
If you end up having something else just let me know and I can help you find what the correct parts are for your application.
