Are Trunnion Bars for Reese Strait-Line 800 lb and 1,200 lb Systems Interchangeable

Question:

I have a 2018 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7L Double Cab Long Bed with Class 4 receiver. I pull an 8x18 flat bed Premier Car Trailer rated up to 7k GVWR. I am looking for a WD system with 4 inch drop shank, 2 5/16 inch ball, sway control, the ability to back up, and also something that is relatively easy to set up for varying loads. I go from pulling a MINI Cooper to pulling Jeeps and Broncos and want something that ranges from 500 to 1000 ish pounds of tongue weight. I have been considering a Reese Strait Line. Are Reese Trunnion bars interchangeable from a 800 lb tongue system to a 1200 lb tongue system etc?

Yes! The trunnion bars for the 1,200 lb and 800 lb Reese Strait-Line weight distribution (WD) systems use the same head unit so they are interchangeable.

I recommend going with the 12K system # RP66074 since it already has the tongue weight (TW) range of 600 lbs - 1,200 lbs and then getting the 400 lb - 800 lb TW bars # RP22225 when you need them. Please note that the trunnion bars come in a single unit so you need to purchase a quantity of 2 for your WD system. The cams that come with the Strait-Line give you one of the best sway controls out there and they still allow you to back up without removing them!

The shank that you need to use to achieve the 4" drop you mentioned is the Fastway e2 # FA92-02-4214 which is rated or up to 1,200 lbs of TW. Even though this is from a different manufacturer the mounting holes and width of the shank are compatible with the Reese systems. For the 2-5/16" hitch ball we have part # 19286.

Please note that the TW range of a WD system includes the loaded TW of your trailer along with the weight of any cargo that sits behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If you plan on having about 100 lbs of equipment in the bed of your 2018 Toyota Tundra then you can just use the 1,200 lb system and you are good to go!
