Troubleshooting Sway When Towing Fifth Wheel Trailer

Question:

Hi! We’ve got a 2017 Dodge Ram 2500, short bed, with a slide hitch, and a 37 foot Momentum Toy hauler. When we get up to 60mph , the trailer and truck rock sideways, pretty violently, and we can’t figure out what the issue is? Any suggestions? Thank you! Ps it hasn’t always done this.

First suggestion would be to stop towing the trailer till you figure out how to fix the sway issue as sway can sometimes flip vehicles/trailers. Sway with fifth wheel trailers is typically not very common when compared to bumper pull towing so when it is happening it's almost always due to suspension problems on the trailer. That would be the first thing I would check. Also make sure you aren't exceeding the towing capacity of your truck. If you are overloading the truck beyond what it was designed to tow that would be a contributing factor.

Toy haulers sometimes will have enough weight in the rear of them as well that the pin weight can end up lighter than ideal. You might try adding weight to the front of the trailer to see if that changes the towing characteristics.

You said it hasn't always done this...has anything changed recently like new tires on the truck?
