What is the Maximum Tongue Weight Capacity of a 2011 Kia Soul

Question:

I read Kia soul 2011 can only take a class 1 hitch mount I assume this is the one my brother had installed on his Kia to carry his electric and gas powered 2 wheeled scooters. He bought an aluminum cargo carrier from harbor freight for this and it works fine. Now he needs to carry our Jazzy elite wheel chair about 160 lbs on the hitch if possible. Harbor freight has a 58 lb. electric wheel chair carrier with 500 lbs. Capacity Aluminum Cargo Carrier for $170.00. Total weight 58 lbs plus 160 lbs is 218 lbs can the Kia handle this?

They do not recommend towing a trailer with your 2011 Kia Soul which means a maximum tongue weight capacity will not be explicitly listed. However, you can find this by taking the Vehicle Capacity Weight and subtracting it by both the Occupant Weight and Available Cargo/Luggage Weight. I have listed these steps for you below but I also strongly recommend you take a look at this for yourself which can be found starting on page 5-46 in your owner's manual.

1. Locate the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs.'' on your vehicle's placard.
2. Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers that will be riding in your vehicle.
3. Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from XXX kg or XXX lbs.
4.The resulting figure equals the available amount of cargo and luggage load capacity. For example, if the "XXX" amount equals 385 kg (849 lbs.), and there will be five 68 kg (150 lbs.) passengers in your vehicle, the amount of available cargo and luggage load capacity is 45 kg (99 lbs.). (385-340 (5 x 68) = 45 kg or 849-750 (5 x 150) = 99 lbs.) 5. Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle. That weight may not safely exceed the available cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in Step 4.
6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Consult this manual to determine how this reduces the available cargo and luggage load capacity of you.

With that being said I would highly doubt the tongue weight capacity of your Soul is 218 lbs. They only make a class I trailer hitch for your vehicle, the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24839 which means any 2" accessory will pretty much be out of the question.
