Why are RV Water Tank Heaters Typically Only Used for Freshwater Tanks

Question:

I’ve read some of your experts’ comments here saying water tank heaters are only needed for fresh not grey water. Please explain. I will be camping at 6000 feet next February and March in New Mexico. It typically gets into the 20’s at night and sometimes lower. I want to keep my tanks and lines from freezing and need some help to find the best option. TIA. Steve

With gray water tanks you can simply pour a couple quarts of RV antifreeze down the drain of a shower and toilet and you'll prevent them from freezing. Since you don't want to drink antifreeze that's why the heaters are typically only used on freshwater tanks.
