Trailer Wiring Compatibility with 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor

Question:

Hi, I recently bought the Tekonsha T-harness part 118540 for my 2016 Ford Explorer. I got the factory harness apart but the ends of the T harness dont fit into the factory ends. They are very close but there doesnt seem to be a way to make them fit. The vehicle is a Police vehicle so its slightly different than a standard Explorer. Does that make a difference? I saw the video that a wiring harness was installed on a Park Ranger vehicle which also appeared to be a Police interceptor so it seems as though its possible to wire one for a small trailer. Any ideas? Have you heard of the Police model having a slightly different wiring harness?

We install harnesses on many vehicles like the park ranger you mentioned and we have not seen any differences with the wiring harnesses on these Explorer models. I reached out to my tech contact at Tekonsha and he said that it is possible you are trying to connect the harness # 118540 to the incorrect connector because there are two that are very similar on the interceptors.

He said there is a black connector and a gray connector that look very similar. The black connector is the one you want for the harness and the gray one will not work. You will find the black connector between the muffler and bumper fascia on right side of the vehicle.
