How to Install Trailer Wiring Harness on 2015 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor

Question:

I have a curt hitch i just installed in 2015 ford police interceptor utility without tow package and after reading an expert answer for a guy who had my exact plug and issue he was advised to buy the c56306 wiring connector. So thats what i did. But just like his picture, i only have one wiring harness on the back pass framerail, not two. So after getting this connector delivered this connector has a slot in the center and 4 flat corner connection pins. See my pic to see my connector. This is quickly becoming a pain in the butt. Please help.

I would say that it's entirely possible that since this is a police interceptor model that there just isn't a plug in for a trailer wiring harness on the vehicle anywhere; however I do believe this is unlikely. I would look on the driver's side (assuming that you haven't already). If you absolutely cannot find any type of wiring harness towards the back of the vehicle, then you've potentially got 2 options.

The first would be the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM40285, which will tee into the vehicle's tail lights and provide you with a 4 way connector. I've attached a photo of the harnesses that I recommend checking to make sure that the tail lights have the same plugs.

If the plugs don't match up with the lights then the only way to add a trailer wiring harness would be with a universal type harness like the Curt Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector - 60" Wire Lead # C58044. This does come with quick splice connectors to ease installation, but you will need to tap into the brake lights and turn signals behind the light housings on your Explorer. You may need a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 to verify the functions of some of the wiring.

Once you've installed these, you can turn those 4 way connectors into a 7 way using the # ETBC7 kit, which comes with all of the remaining parts needed for installation.

If you can check and see if there are any harnesses that look like the photos of the # C56306 on the driver's side of the vehicle, that would be the best place to start but I'm confident that the plug you've pictured is not a trailer wiring plug.
