Determining Hitch Height Needed to Tow Trailer Level and Clear Bed Rails on 2017 GMC Sierra 3500

Question:

hello Sir THE BandW BWRVK 3700 has a min of 16 3/4 whereas the Curt C16530-16025 has a max of 17 so from just that point of view which might work best with the 3500 bed height angle from the ground up to the top rail. My last pu was a gmc 2500 with a Curt but have no idea of the hitch model# from 2004. thank you

The best height setting for a 5th wheel hitch on your 2017 GMC Sierra 3500 will depend a lot on the trailer you are planning to tow. You will first want to determine what height the hitch should be at in order to pull the trailer level when it's hooked up. With your trailer parked on level ground, take a measurement from the ground up to the bottom of the king pin. Then on your truck take a measurement from the ground to the truck bed floor where the hitch will sit. The difference in these two measurements will give you the ideal hitch height so that the trailer is level.

From there you can take a couple measurements to see what kind of bed rail clearance you will have. We recommend having at least 6 inches of clearance from the top of the bed rails to the trailer overhang (see attached image). As you are probably aware, the bed rails on newer model trucks are getting taller and taller. This means that a taller hitch like the B&W Companion # BWRVK3700 that you referenced (which is a great choice) will likely be your best option. It has a maximum height setting of 18-3/4 inches. You will still just have to be sure to keep the trailer as level as possible. Also keep in mind that most pin boxes can be adjusted on the trailer.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this hitch that you can check out as well.
