Troubleshooting New Landing Gear Leg and Motor Blowing Fuse When Extending

Question:

I have a 2002 snowbird legend. I started having trouble blowing the landing leg motor fuse while raising. I thought maybe the motor was going bad so I purchased a new Stromberg motor. While I was waiting for the new motor I decided to check out the landing legs for wear while I had the front wall off. There was considerable wear so I ordered a new set of Stromberg-Carlson landing legs from etrailer. I also checked the wiring for a possible short but found none. When they arrived I made sure that there was plenty of grease on the jack screws and the gears. I re-installed everything and made sure it all worked before I replaced the front wall. The next time I raised the front again I blew a fuse. There is no problem retracting the legs and no problem extending until after I put a load on it. Even then it doesnt blow until I run the motor for about 30 seconds or so. I also thought maybe the switch may be bad so I ordered and installed a new one. It still blows the fuse after about 30 seconds under load. What can I do?

You have pretty much ruled out the legs themselves and the motor from being the issue since you now have all new components. Fuses blow because the circuit is getting overdrawn - the tricky part is finding out why this overdraw is occuring.

I first just recommend making sure that you aren't exceeding the weight capacity of the landing gear system with the weight of the trailer. This would cause the jacks to draw too much amperage and in turn blow the fuse, especially since it is only happening with a load applied and while extending.

If weight isn't the issue then there is likely a short somewhere on the wiring. You did mention that you checked this but I recommend giving it one more look, tracing the wires from the battery to the motor and inspecting them for any exposed or damaged sections. Also make sure that the ground wire is securely connected to a clean, bare metal surface that is free of corrosion. A weak ground can certainly lead to the fuse blowing since it would prevent enough power from getting to the motor.

Also make sure the trailer battery is fully charged and in good condition. It's very possible that the battery is low or bad which is causing the motor to keep trying to draw power from it that isn't there.

Please just let me know if you still aren't able to locate and resolve the issue and I will be happy to look into this further.
