Installing LED Brake Indicator and Tow Bar Wiring for a 2004 Jeep Liberty
Question:
I recently purchased a 2004 Jeep Liberty 4x4 as a towed for my 2018 E-450 chassis motorhome. With the Liberty I inherited a nonfunctional SMI Stay in Play DUO braking system. I be been able to make the system functional again a few wiring issues but need assistance in making the system operate as I would like it to. 1. The LED light, mounted on the front of the Liberty’s rear view mirror is a nonstandard part and cannot be seen in the tow vehicle’s camera. So, I’ve ordered p/n SMI SM99612 LED assy from your company. I then saw your video on how to remotely mount these LEDs on the dash of the towing vehicle. The video shows a 2007 Jeep Wrangler and mentions that the signal for the LEDs is picked up by the blue wire on the breakaway switch, since the battery on the Jeep is disconnected. With my Liberty, the battery remains connected it operates the DUO vacuum pump so my first question is, do I still connect the to the breakaway switch blue wire? 2. My second, related question is in regards to how the SMI DUO system is powered. Since it is powered from the Jeep’s battery, I’m concerned about running the battery down. I’d like to be able to charge the Jeep’s battery from the coach while driving. I would like your recommendation on a suitable charger that I can mount next to the Jeep battery and can connect to the 12vdc pin on the coach’s 7 pin connector. 3. The above two modifications will require I change out the existing 4 pin connector on the Jeep’s bumper for a 6 or 7 pin connector. Would you please recommend a connector male and female along with mounting bracket? Thanks for your time.

You can connect the Replacement LED Monitor Light # SM99612 to the blue wire of the breakaway switch that comes with the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 but since you don't have to disconnect the battery on your 2004 Jeep Liberty you can just route the wire to the cold side of the stop light switch. This is located behind a panel under your steering wheel and you will need to find what wire is related to this. When we did some testing we found this to be the white wire with the brown stripe but this can sometimes vary so it is important to do some testing on your end as well.
For your wiring situation I recommend installing the Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7 which comes with a 6-Way connector for your Jeep Liberty as well as a 6-Way to 7-Way coiled wire adapter. You can cut off your current 4-Way and then connect the wiring according to the attached picture. This will also allow you to install the Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 from the center pin of the 6-Way connector to your battery to keep it charged.
To keep your brake lights working properly you will also need to install the Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit # RM-88400 (if it isn't already installed). I have attached an installation that you can follow for this as well as locating the cold side of the stop light switch that I mentioned above.
I have also attached some other installation videos that you can reference.
