Recommended Grease for Packing Trailer Wheel Bearings

Question:

What type of grease do I need for my utility trailer wheel bearings? When I try and Google the subject or look for it on amazon the results keep coming back with a marine grease. Can I use a multipurpose grease or is there a wheel bearing grease I need. The trailer is a 4 X 8 utility that I use to tow my riding lawnmower to transport my motorcycle. I have a 3oz gun.

For wheel bearings on a trailer I recommend going with a high-temperature grease like the Prime Guard # L11380. This polyurea-based grease works perfectly for packing wheel bearings. When using this or any other grease you will want to clean off all of the old grease first (unless you know that you are using the same exact grease you used before). This is simply because some formulas of grease are not compatible with each other and the resulting reactions can lead to bearing failure down the line.

Marine grease like # L54FR can certainly be used as well but it's likely not necessary for your particular application. We tend to recommend marine trailer bearing grease for hubs that are used on boat trailers and other marine applications that will have constant exposure to water and the elements.

I have attached a great article on packing or replacing trailer bearings that you might also find helpful.
