Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for Ram Factory Prep Package and Lippert Turning Point Pin Box

Question:

Hi, I am looking at a Grand Design Reflection 150 290BH, which has the Lippert Turning Point Swivel Pin Box. I will be towing with a 2016 Ram 2500 Mega Cab with a 6foot 4inch bed and a factory fifth wheel prep kit. The dealer is recommending an Anderson Ultimate Hitch, but I have read that it is not preferred with the Turning Point. Can you please recommend a few hitches for my application? Thanks

It sounds like your dealer is trying to sell you. The rotating pin boxes like the Lippert Turning Point cannot be used with an Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel Hitch because it won't give that solid connection at the hitch and would absolutely not be safe. These rotating pin boxes require a wedge to keep the pin box from moving in the hitch location so that they have the single movement point farther back to allow turning clearance.

The Lippert Turning Point Pin box and your 2016 Ram 2500 with 6-1/2 foot bed are a good pair to give you the turning clearance you need for your short bed so you can use a fixed mounted hitch instead of a sliding hitch because sliding hitches and rotating pin boxes don't mix so you'd need to keep it in the towing position anyway.

For your Grand Design Reflection 150 290BH which is fairly light, you don't need a big hitch. I recommend the following options:

Reese OEM 5th Wheel Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package # RP30918 which is rated high at 20,000 lbs but is what the original rotating pin box was designed to work with. You'll need the # RP44FR wedge kit to fit with your Turning Point pin box.

Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package # C16520-16021 which is a good hitch that will fit in your factory pucks and is rated for 16,000 lbs.

The strongest and most durable hitch is the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package - 25,000 lbs # BWRVK3600. This hitch is made in the U.S.A.

You may want to consider adding a wiring harness like # 50-97-410 to give you that easy connection for a clean look in your truck bed.

You can alternatively use an adapter like # RP30154 and any fixed mounted hitch that utilizes industry standard base rails and has the standard hitch pin connection.
