Recommendation for Lightweight Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for Short Bed 2017 Ram 2500

Question:

Hi, I have a 2017 Ram 2500 megacab short bed 6.4, 2X4, manual tranny. In an attempt to save as much as my 2,250 lb payload, I was looking at the Demco recon. Would this be suitable in a short bed? If not, can you suggest a 5th wheel hitch that might? Again, weight is an important factor and the wife is really set on the king pin set up, no Andersen ultimate hitch. She thinks it is not as secure. Thank you for your time.

The Demco Recon Gooseneck Hitch Adapter # DM8550045 referenced in your question is designed to attach to an existing gooseneck hitch ball on the truck. It is indeed a nice lightweight option but it likely won't provide the needed cab clearance to make tight turns with your short bed Ram 2500.

Without adding to or replacing the pin box on your trailer (I do agree with your wife that the Anderson hitch isn't the most secure option), you will need to go with a sliding fifth-wheel hitch to ensure you get the necessary cab clearance. Because of their design and the components required, sliding hitches do tend to be on the heavier side, but I will recommend some good lightweight models.

For a hitch that weighs a bit more but offers an upgraded jaw and head design, I recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16521. This sliding hitch weighs 193 pounds and has an interlocking 2-jaw system to provide excellent contact with the trailer king pin and a fully articulating head to help with hookup and provide you with a stable, quiet ride.

Regardless of the hitch you choose, I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit # RP50054-58 for your base rails. This kit includes custom brackets that will use existing holes in your truck's frame to eliminate the need for any frame drilling.

I have attached a few short video demonstrations on these products that you can also check out.
