Recommended Suspension Kit and Leaf Springs for Tandem Axle Trailer with 4.80x12 Tires

Question:

I bought a used trailer a few years ago with tandem axles that has 4.80x12 tires. Frame and springs completely rusted out. I need to find out which spring and hanger kit I need as the old parts have been thrown out. Im building a new frame and I’m not sure how far apart the tires need to be. Thanks

For your tandem axle trailer with 12 inch wheels, you will want to use the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double Eye Springs - 3-3/4" Tall Front/Center/Rear # APT5. The spacing of the tires/axles will depend on the load capacity of your axles. With the 4.80-12 tires like # TA98RR, your axles could be rated for 2,000 lbs, 2,200 lbs, or 3,500 lbs.

If your axles are 2,000 or 2,200 lbs capacity, then you will space your axles 29-1/2 inches on center and use the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e84SR. If you axles are 3,500 lbs capacity, then you will space your axles 33-1/2 inches on center and use leaf spring # e54SR.

I've attached some photos and an article on where to position your axles in relation to your coupler.
