Question:

I HAVE MY 2013 FORD EDGE SEL WITH BLUE OX BASE PLATES, TOW BAR, WIRING & BLUE OX BRAKING SYSTEM INSTALLED. I HAVE USED IT WHILE TOWING IT BEHIND MY 2013 THOR-CHATEAU, 24foot MOTOR HOME. IT IS STILL FUNCTIONAL! NOW I WANT TO BUY A NEW 2018 FORD EDGE SEL- TO REPLACE MY 2013 FORD EDGE ALL INSTALLED BLUE OX EQUIPMENT IS STILL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION! MY QUESTION IS: CAN THE BLUE OX BASE PLATES AND BRAKING SYSTEMS, INSTALLED ON MY 2013 FORD EDGE SEL , BE REMOVED AND RE-INSTALLED ON A NEW 2018 FORD EDGE SEL MODEL ?

You will be able to use your Blue Ox braking system and tow bar but you will need new base plates. The 2013 and 2018 Ford Edge SEL use different base plate designs. Base plates # BX2657 work with SEL models that do not have Active Cruise Control or the 2.0 EcoBoost motor. And they will not fit models with the Driver Assist Package. If your 2018 does have Active Cruise Control but not the EcoBoost 2.0 liter motor then you can use base plates # BX2667.

These base plates will be compatible with your Blue Ox tow bar, such as the Alpha # BX7380, or another Blue Ox tow bar. Make sure your safety cables are in good shape. If you need to replace them you can use # BX88196.

For your braking system, if you are using the Patriot you can continue to use it. To make installation easier though you could get a second vehicle breakaway kit # BRK2505 so you won't have to spend the time and energy removing it from the 2013 Edge.

To power the braking system you will also need outlet kit # RM-9332 because when the Edge is in flat tow mode the stock outlets won't have power. Also, you will need stop light switch kit # RM-751475 which activates the motorhome brake-monitoring system whenever the brake pedal in the Edge is applied. This ensures that the supplemental braking system is functioning properly.

The current recommended lighting systems for the 2018 Edge SEL are either magnetic light kits such as # RM-2120. In this case it does appear that you will need to disconnect the battery to flat tow the Edge. You can make this process automatic by installing the automatic battery disconnect # RM-766. And to have a charge line running to the Edge battery use # RM-156-25. The charge line will help to keep the battery from depleting.

You may also need a high-low adapter to keep the tow bar level. I have included a link to a help article that explains how to measure to determine the size adapter needed, if any.
