Weak Brakes on Toy Hauler with Tandem 7,000 Pound Trailer Axles
Question:
I have a fifth wheel Toy Hauler. It is tandem 7k axles. I would really like better braking power. Not changing over to Disc. I can never get my brakes to lock even in dirt going slow. Can I put brakes for a heavier axle on? Are they bigger, will they fit and what is all needed to do that if it is better? Thank you for the help.

You might just need to adjust your trailer brakes. Over time as the pad material wears down the brakes will not grip as much as they used to. Adjusting them out will allow them to grip better. You can see how to adjust the brakes by going to the 11:22 mark of the video I have linked for you. The tool he is using is an adjustment spoon, # W80630.
You may also need to adjust the output on your brake controller (for electric brakes). Or there could be a wiring issue or a problem with the brake magnets themselves if you can't find any damaged or pinched wires. I have included a link to our help article on testing brake magnets.
Brakes for axles larger than 7,000 pounds will be larger and will have a different mounting pattern than the brakes for 7K axles.
