No Power To Reverse Lights On Trailer

Question:

I Have a 2003 GMC Yukon XL with the Z82 Towing package. I tow A boat trailer with surge Brakes. To deactivate the surge brakes when backing up I need to have power on the trailer plug for Backup Lights on the 7 way plug, which is terminal 7, center plug wire color Lt Green. I have checked all the fuses all Ok except for Engine Compartment fuse labeled TRLR B/U, 10a. This fuse is OK but there is no power to either of the plugs for the fuse under any circumstances Engine on, Lights on, In reverse. The Backup lights on the car work just not to the plug. Also I activated the Terminal 4 Red Battery Power and still no power. I am at a loss as what else to look at.

It sounds like you are having trouble with the signals and getting power to your trailer connector on your 2003 GMC Yukon XL. The type of trailer socket that carries reverse light signals is the 7-way type, like # 37185, which is included in our 7-way installation kit # ETBC7.

Since you did not detect signals when you checked your wiring harness plugs, check the main ground wire to ensure it is tightly attached to a clean bare metal spot on the vehicle. A weak ground can cause some lighting functions to not work. Another likely cause is corrosion on or inside the trailer connectors. If your 7-way is corroded you will want to replace it. You can send me a photo of the trailer socket and I can then help you select a replacement.

Also inspect the wiring for any damaged areas where copper is visible or any spots where the jacketing on the wire is broken. If you discover any damage, repair or replace any damaged wire sections. Pay close attention to areas where wire might run near moving parts. Also Inspect and replace any butt connectors, splice connectors or direct splices that may have worked loose or are not making a secure connection.
