Black Steel Wheel and Baby Moon Hub Cap Recommendation for a 1966 Serro Scotty Canned Ham Trailer
Question:
Hello, You have given us super service before and we hope you can figure this one out for us. We own a 1966 Serro Scotty 15 travel trailer canned ham. Somewhere along the line it lost its original rims which were 15 x 5 - 5 on 4-1/2 that took 640/15 tires. Right now our trailer has LOADSTAR ST175/80D, 13 White Spoke Wheels, Load Range B 4-ply rating, Max. Capacity: 1100 lbs. each, Maximum PSI: 35 lbs., Overall Diameter: 24.0, 5 on 4.5 on it. This configuration works even though the wheels/tires are the wrong size diameter. We want to return our camper to its original look of black rims with half moon chrome hub caps. The eTrailer website description does not list the maximum PSI for this wheel rim. Also, is the offset of this rim the same as that for the 13 white rim that is on the trailer now? We dont know what the original wheels offset was. Some folks say that old Ford car rims are very close to those the original rims. I believe the wheels/tires currently on our trailer were bought as a set. Thanks for your time!

I will start out with your original tire. I did some calculations and the overall diameter of your original 640/15 tire would be approximately 25.48 inches and the width would be 6.4 inches. The diameter of the older tire is most likely why, when the wheels and tires were replaced, someone went with a 13 inch wheel and tire assembly.
Newer 15 inch trailer tires all start out at around 27 inches diameter which may pose a contact problem with your trailers fender wells. In addition 15 inch trailer tires are wider, starting at about 7-1/2 inches, which may cause contact issues with the trailer frame or inside or outside of the fender well.
The Black Conventional Steel Wheel, # AM20504, that you referred to is rated at 1,820 lbs at 50psi. The positive offset of this wheel would move the wider 15 inch tire even closer to the trailer frame making the possibility for contact even more likely. The original offset for most trailers is 0 because that centers the load of the trailer on the center of the wheel and tire combination, creating the best load carrying setup for the trailer. Offset trailer wheels and tires are rare, and normally only show up in very specific applications where the weight on a trailer will not change significantly. Your offset and the 13 inch wheel and tire combination is more than likely a 0 offset for the best load carrying ability.
To go back to a Black wheel with Baby Moons and a bit larger tire that would work within the size limitation of your original tire size, I would recommend going with the Black Powder Coat Steel Wheel # AM20214, and the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Trailer Tire, # AM1ST79. This combination will be capable of gross trailer weights up to 3,320 pounds per axle, and would give you the look you are trying to get back to with a set of Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Caps, # AM90086.
The Black Powder Coat Steel Wheel # AM20214, is rated at 1,660 lbs at 65 psi, per wheel, so it is rated slightly below the capacity of the ST185/80D13 tire I recommended.
If you determine that there is extra clearance, you could do some measuring to see if a 14 inch wheel and tire combination would work on your trailer. For a 14 inch combination I would recommend the Black Powder Coat Steel Wheel, # AM20304, and the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Trailer Tire, # AM1ST86. The same Baby Moon will fit this wheel, and this wheel also has a 0 offset for load handling. The # AM20304 wheel is rated at 1,870 lbs at 50 psi and the # AM1ST86 tire is rated at 1,760 lbs at 50 psi, so your capacity would be increased to 3,520 lbs per axle. The overall diameter of this wheel and tire combination will be about 26-1/2 inches and the width will be about 8 inches.
