Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with Brakes Using a 2016 Honda Pilot
Question:
Hi, I have a 2016 Honda Pilot AWD Touring. I am looking to tow a tent trailer about 1800 lbs. My vehicle does not have the tow package so I need to get everything I need including whatever is needed for electric brakes. I am a little confused on the electric brakes. I read somewhere Honda only has the 4 pole but all the trailers are 7. If you could help me sort out what I need and how it works I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I would be happy to help you get your 2016 Honda Pilot ready to tow your tent trailer!
Out of the trailer hitch options that we have for your Pilot I recommend the the etrailer hitch # e98840. Please note that both this hitch and the Curt # C13146 will fit models with an 18" or smaller spare tire that sits under the vehicle.
For a ball mount to tow your trailer the Curt Class III Ball Mount with 2" Ball - 2" Drop # C45036 is a great option to use but you will want to consult the attached ball mount article to determine if the 2" drop is what you need for your towing setup.
As for the wiring, you need to start off by installing a 4-Way Flat connector like the Tekonsha T-One # 118760. This gives you the basic lighting functions for your trailer. Since you will be using a brake controller you also need to install the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. The ETBC7 kit includes everything needed for you to have a fully functional 7-Way controller.
The brake controller that I recommend going with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that will apply the brakes on your trailer at the same time and with the same intensity as the brakes in your vehicle. The best feature about this brake controller is the LCD screen that makes operation and diagnosing any problems much easier than an older controller that only uses codes.
I have attached some helpful articles as well as an installation video of the ETBC7 and the Prodigy P2 # 90885 (which installs the same as the P3) on a 2007 Pilot that you can use as a reference.
