Installing Junction Box to Allow Use of Additional Reverse Lights on Trailer

Question:

Wondering the best way to install LED lights onto my boat trailer that will act as reverse spotlights. The lights have red/black wires. They are not single-function, as in, they only work when connected positive-to-positive, not negative-to-positive. My trailer has a 4 pin but I use a 7-pin adapter to connect to my truck. Is there a way to make the lights work if I purchased an item like # PK12706 RV-Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End?

Expert Reply:

Yes, if you replace the 4-pole connector on your trailer wiring using Pollak Black Plastic 7-Pole Trailer Plug # PK12706 you will be able to access the reverse light signals that are present on the 7-way socket on your truck. You will need to add a new length of wire to connect between the new 7-way plug and the new lights.

An easier way to go is to use a junction box like # HS381-9000. You can mount this on the trailer, connect the existing trailer wiring inside it using ring terminals # 44-5310A, and also make the new connection to the new reverse lights using wire # 12-1-1.

You can refer to the linked article for help on the wiring configuration.
