Replacing Leaf Springs On Trailer To A Lower Capacity To Avoid Road Shock
Question:
I have a standard 5foot x 8foot utility trailer with a wood floor, and I haul a small polyehtylene plastic boat on it, which doesnt weight over 180 lbs. Could I replace the leaf springs that came standard on the trailer with ones that provide for about 1/3 to 1/2 the load capacity in order to soften the ride of the trailer, and reduce the shock transmitting through the trailer? I think the trailer is rated at about a 1500# payload capacity right now. The shock and vibration from this little trailer going down the road, with so little weight on it, is just through the roof! Yes you can replace the leaf springs that came standard on the trailer to soften the ride of the trailer. Just be advised that the total capacity of the trailer will be lowered because you will be limited by the lower rated springs.
You can refer to the linked articles for help in selecting appropriate springs for your trailer. Do note that very well-worn springs can become elongated from years of use. If you remove a spring from the trailer and measure it you may find that it has become a bit longer than when it was brand new. This is a normal occurrence.
