Recommended Wheels and How To Determine Trailer Hubs Needed For 8 Lugs and 16 Inch Wheels

Question:

I have a 1988 6.5 by 12’ double axel with a 5 lug 15” rim. I’m wanting to change it to a 8 lug hub so all my rims I have for it and my camper are 16” tires. Do you have any advice on how to make that happen. Thanks

For your wheels, I recommend the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" Silver Mod Wheel - 8 on 6-1/2 - Load Range E # LHAW133 for your 16-inch 8 lug wheels. These tires are rated for 3,520 lbs at 80 psi and speeds up to 75 mph. These come nitrogen filled for better psi maintenance for better function. The tires have a 5 year warranty, the wheels have a 1 year warranty, and the also come with a 1 year No Excuses Guarantee on the tire.

To upgrade your hubs on your trailer axles, you will need to pull one of the hubs and get the bearing numbers printed on the face of the inner and outer bearing. This number is etched into the face of the bearing. You will need to do the same with the seal on the back of the hub. From there, I can determine what hub replacement you need.

If you can't get the bearing numbers, then you will need to measure the spindle in the bearing and seal locations using a digital caliper like # PTW80157. These measurements do need to be precise. I've attached a photo to assist.
