Having the exhaust system contact and rattle against the hitch is a fairly common occurrence that can happen with just about any vehicle. You can install the hitch on two identical vehicles, and it'll rattle on one and not on the other. When the hitch is installed, it's in a static or fixed postion. It will not move. Due to the rubber isolators used to install exhaust systems, the exhaust system can move around a bit and its exact location can vary a bit from vehicle to vehicle. There's no getting around it, it's the nature of the beast. Luckily, there's an easy fix. Exhaust hangers are very easy to bend, as long as you do it gently and slowly. The exhaust system is designed to have a bit of play in it, moving it by a small amount won't harm anything. We have an excellent FAQ article about this issue, you can see it by clicking the link.
The only appreciable difference between the Draw-Tite # 75712 Class III and the # 36423 Class II is the size of the receiver tube. The hitch mounting plates are the same size, and they'll mount at the same spot on the vehicle.
Because this is a possibility with any hitch on any vehicle, I recommend going with the # 75712 Class III trailer hitch. First, it is going to give you greater towing and tongue weight capacity. Second, there are more accessory options like bike racks and cargo carriers for a 2 inch receiver on a Class III hitch. The price differential between the two is negligable.
If you plan on doing some towing, I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK4. It comes with a ball mount, pin and clip, and a interchangeable ball set with 2 inch and 1-7/8 inch diameter balls. For trailer wiring use # C55050. I have included an instruction link for the wiring harness and the hitches. I've also linked to an install video showing the Class III being installed on a 2010 Compass.
