Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2004 Ford Sport Trac
Question:
A Sport trac that I just bought has a connector behind the rear bumper that looks like a 4 pin flat but how can I tell by looking if this is a valid connector? It did not come from the factory with a receiver but it does have a bumper that has a hole for a ball mount. Did all Sport Tracs come ready with the wiring? If not, what kit do I need to go 4 pin flat only no brakes necessary. Thanks

If the connector you found looks like the picture I've attached, then you have a 4-way trailer connector. If you're still unsure, send me a picture of the connector you've found so I can see it. To find out if it functions properly, you'll need to use a circuit tester, part # PTW2992, and test each function; stop lights, turn signals, and running lights. I've linked a video on how to test with the # PTW2993.
To the best of my knowledge Sport Tracs did not all come with trailer wiring from the factory. With that being said we don't carry any custom 4-way trailer connectors for the 2004 model years. I recommend using part # 18252 if you need a 4-way.
If you'd like to utilize the hitch ball hole in the bumper, you need to determine the diameter of the hole. Then get a hitch ball with that same diameter shank. I've lined out seletion of hitch balls. Make sure the ball size is the same as what fits the coupler of the trailer you'll be towing.
Instead if you want to add a hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite, part # 75112, that's confirmed to fit your Sport Trac. It bolts onto the frame and includes all of the hardware.
