What Typically Causes Trailer Tire Failure of 5 by 8 Utility Trailer

Question:

Hi, I have Load Range B Tire DOT K3B5-U12 Max. Load 785lbs. @ 60PSI. 5 on 41/2 bolts pattern on 5x8 flat bed trailer. I used it to haul 4 wheeler while we are hunting and for the past 4 years, one of the tire will failed every year. I was thinking about getting a bigger tires and rims, Will Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10inch White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range E Item # AM3H480 for me or what is your advise for me? Thanks,

Expert Reply:

Typically what causes trailer tire failure is either overloading or exceeding the speed rating for the tire. It's unfortunate but most people aren't aware that the vast majority of trailer tires are only rated for 65 miles per hour. Exceeding that causes heat build up which makes the tire more likely to fail.

The Kenda tire and wheel part # AM3H480 that you referenced has an unusually high speed rating of 87 miles per hour. If your trailer can accommodate the width and diameter of this tire (8.4 inches wide by 20.4 inches tall), this would be a great option as it has the same 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you have.
