Recommended Bike Rack for 1998 CRV that Features Locking Cable

Question:

I want a 2 bike rack that locks the bikes to the rack. Several racks can be locked onto the vehicle, but I want to lock the individual bikes on the rack. 1998 Honda CR-V, 1-1/4 receiver. Any recommendations?

The rear mounted spare tire on your vehicle might limit which racks can be used on your vehicle. You should consider the Thule Camber, part # TH9058 might be just what you are looking for, if it will clear the spare tire.

This bargain-priced rack has features usually found on higher priced racks like anti-sway cradles and tilting for cargo access. The arms will also fold down for easier storage.

To determine if it will fit, you will need to measure the distance from the hitch pin hole in the receiver to the furthest rearward portion of the spare tire. The easiest way to make this measurement is to have a friend hold a straight piece of lumber like a 2 x 4 flush against the face of the spare tire. Measure from the center of the hitch pin hole rearward to the piece of lumber. This measurement represents the minimum clearance needed for your bike rack. The # TH9058 has a shank that measures 5-3/4 inches from the hitch pin hole to the closest upright portion of the rack. If the measurement you take is less than 5-3/4" inches, this rack will work for you. You can then use the cable lock # e98891 to secure the bikes to the rack and # THSTL2 to secure the rack to the vehicle.

If that is not enough space, the # SA882 allows 9-1/2 inches or the #B01748 allows 12-1/4 inches of clearance. You could consider one of these instead of the THule for your bike rack.

If you should find that you have insufficient clearance, another option would be the Yakima SpareRide2 Spare Tire Mounted Rack, part # Y02599. This rack would actually attach to the mounting studs that fasten the spare tire to the rear of your CRV, and does include a locking cable that is keyed alike to the lock that secures the rack to the spare tire.

We have product demonstration videos that feature both racks. To see the videos, click on the provided links.
