Recommended Ball Mount and Wiring For 2014 Mazda CX-5 to Tow Golf Cart on Trailer

Question:

Hello - Im looking into getting a flatbed trailer to use to haul my club cart golf cart. I have a 2014 Mazda CX-5 with the factory tow package - 1-1/4inch hitch. Do you have suggestions as to what kinds of trailers I should be looking into acquiring, or what specs I need to be looking into when looking at trailers? Im also aware I will need a ball-mount and possibly wiring, as well as tie-downs for the cart itself. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your 2014 Mazda CX-5 has a towing capacity of 2000 lbs which restrict a trailer hitch like # C12170 to that capacity. For your Club Cart Golf Cart, from what measurements and weights I can find online, the Detail K2 Mighty Multi A-Frame Utility Trailer - 7-1/2' Long - 1,640 lbs # K2MMT5X7 is a great option for you. You will need ramps if you use this trailer like the # 288-07489. This will be a tight fit, but that will help to secure it. You will also need tie downs like the Erickson Ratchet Tie-Down Straps w/ Web Clamps and S-Hooks - 1" x 10' - 500 lbs - Qty 4 # EM31352.

When looking at a trailer, you need to determine the weight capacity as well as the length and width. You may want a trailer with a ramp or a tilt bed that will allow driving up on it.

For a ball mount, I recommend the Curt Class II Drawbar - 2-5/8" Rise, 3-1/4" Drop - 7-1/4" Long # C45521 along with a 2 inch diameter ball like # A-82. You will also need a pin and clip like # F-4.

For your trailer wiring, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118563. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your Mazda CX-5's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings and the rear and side scuff panels to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery. I've attached an article to help with running this wire to the battery.
