Roof Rack Recommendation for 2016 BMW X3 and Cargo Box That Works With It and Other Vehicles

Question:

Hi, I have a Nissan pathfinder 2014 with a factory roof rack and my husband has a 2016 BMW X3. He is looking for a roof rack, is there a cargo box that would then work for the both of us? I would like to spend wisely. Please advise.

Let's start with the roof rack, and for your husband's 2016 BMW X3 with flush mounted rails on his roof, I recommend the Rhino Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA126B-2, which would mount to the roof with the Rhino Rack SRB Legs # RRSX026.

As for that cargo box, you have a number of options depending on the cargo space you need, the spread of your crossbars, if you are looking for something aerodynamic, and of course, budget. The Thule Sidekick # TH78GC is the most economical option, though it has 8 cubic feet of cargo space with a weight capacity of 75 lbs; it requires a crossbar spread between 23-5/8" - 28".

Last but definitely not least is the Thule Pulse # TH614. I recommend this over the other due to the fact it has 14 cubic feet of cargo space (yet at 34 lbs is lighter than the RocketBox Pro), is aerodynamic, weather and UV resistant, has load straps to secure your cargo, a built-in handle, and can be locked with the Thule One-Key system. The Pulse has a weight capacity of 110 lbs and requires a crossbar spread between 23-5/8" - 33-3/8". I've added links to video reviews of each of these boxes for you to take a look at.

When it comes to whether or not these boxes are going to interfere with the opening of the rear hatch on your vehicles, there is a very simple measurement you will need to take. Just measure from the front of your roof rack crossbar to the seam where your roof and hatch open. If you have 42-5/8" of clearance, the Pulse will open without interference, and if you have at least 36" the Sidekick will open without interference. I have attached diagrams for you to take a look at which should help out as well.
