Before deciding on which trailer hitch and other towing equipment you will be needing to tow a boat, an understanding the towing capacity and tongue weight capacity of your vehicle will be needed. The attached picture is from the 2014 Jeep Cherokee owner's manual and lists the maximum trailer weight ratings for all the Cherokee drivetrain options for the 2014 year.
If your boat and trailer combo falls under the max weight rating for your specific Cherokee, then you will be able to tow with your vehicle.
First, a trailer hitch will be needed to be installed on your Jeep. I recommend the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C13172. I like this hitch because the hitch's square crossbar when installed fits up behind the bumper giving it a more hidden look on the Jeep. The hitch has a 2x2 inch receiver opening and is designed to bolt to the frame of your Jeep without drilling or welding required.
Next, a lighting solution will be needed to run the trailer lights. I recommend Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, # C56208. This kit will install a 4-flat pole trailer lighting harness to your vehicle. This will allow you to run power to the trailer turn, stop, and running lights.
If by chance your boat trailer uses electric brakes instead of the more common hydraulic surge brakes, then you will need a brake controller for the inside of your Jeep's cab. To install the brake controller a 7-way trailer connector will need to be installed a the rear of the vehicle. The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat, # ETBC7, will include the 7-way connector and all the wiring and components needed to install a brake controller.
As for a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, # 90885. The P2 is one of our most popular controllers that we offer. The reason for its popularity is because of its easy installation and setup.
I have attached product videos and articles on towing, brake controllers, and wiring for you to review.
