For a 1971 Ford F-250, you can use the Tekonsha 4-way hardwiring connector # 18252. Then you can use the Universal Brake Controller Wiring Kit # ETBC7 to add the connections needed for a brake controller. This will give you all the wiring, connections, and circuit breakers you need. This is not a difficult wiring job and will give you a 7-way connection at the bumper for a trailer with brakes. It also maintains the 4-way so no adapter is needed for smaller trailers.
Then you can use whatever brake controller you desire. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 because it is extremely reliable and easy to use. It has presets for the trailer size and also will give you diagnostic information and errors without the need to decipher codes. It is user friendly with the LCD screen. I've attached videos to help you with the install.
