What is the Wheel Backspacing of the Kenda Tire with 8 inch Galvanized Wheel # AM3H240

Question:

Can you tell me what the backspacing is on this rim/tire? Want to upgrade 4.80x8s on a LoadRite jetski trailer and have already tried a 215/60x8 which has too much backspacing and rubs the trailer springs.

The backspacing of the wheel that is on this Kenda Trailer Tire with 8 inch Galvanized Wheel, part # AM3H240, is 2-11/16 inches.

With a wheel that has a zero offset like the wheel from the # AM3H240 in order to figure out backspacing you will take the width of the wheel and then divide by 2 to determine what the backspacing is. And since the width of this 5-3/8 inches the backspacing is 2-11/16 inches.

The next thing you will want to do is add a half inch to this measurement to compensate for the outboard flange of the wheel that is not accounted for in the backspacing measurement. So 2-11/16 plus a half an inch is 3-3/16 inches. So that will be the distance all the way out to the furthest point out on the rim.

Now, you will want to take into consideration the distance that the tire bulges out past the outboard flange of the wheel. I went out into our warehouse and measured this distance and found it to be 1/8 of an inch. So 1/8 added to 3-3/16 is 3-5/16.

So now we know that you will need more than 3-5/16 inches from the mounting surface of the hub back to the nearest point of your trailer spring for it not to rub.
