Can the Powered Converter Wiring Kit be Connected to a 12 Volt Power Outlet on a 2010 VW Jetta TDI
Question:
just purchased #55151 for my 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. is it possible that instead of connecting directly to the battery, using that same cable and connecting it to a 12V power outlet in the trunk area? I believe 12V power is the same wether from a battery or power outlet. Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

Expert Reply:
We do not recommend using the 12 volt power outlet in the trunk area for connection of a powered circuit protected wiring harness, like the Curt Hardwire Kit, # C59236, which includes the wiring to the battery. The purpose of the power wire is to eliminate the power draw on the vehicles electrical system and sensitive circuitry. Providing power directly from the vehicle battery is the only way to eliminate the draw on the vehicle electrical system.
If you use the 12 volt power outlet in the trunk area, the harness would work, but if there were a short on the installed trailer wiring harness or trailer you would be putting the vehicle electrical system at risk.
