With the trailer weight that you provided, I recommend using a weight distribution system with sway control on your towing setup. Any time the trailer weighs more than half of the weight of the two vehicle we recommend using a weight distribution system. Even using a hitch with a 2-1/2 receiver opening will not negate the use of weight distribution with a trailer weighing as much as yours.

I have attached a FAQ article on weight distribution that will have more information on when weight distribution will be needed on a trailer and tow vehicle combination.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded total tongue weight of the setup. You should note that the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your vehicle should be considered tongue weight as well. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out. I recommend using the etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale, e99044, when trying to find your towing rig total tongue weight.

If you find out that your current weight distribution system needs to be upgraded due to the amount of your total tongue weight, then contacts us back and we will be happy to help you find a system to fit your towing needs.
