Recommended Kayak Carrier for 2009 Acura RDX
Question:
I have a 2009 Acura RDX without rails. I had a Thule Hullavator kayak carrier on my prior vehicle that had factory rails, I'm looking for other options now because the roof rack would be lower mounting to doors. Are there rear hitch carriers for kayaks?

I do have a solution for you, however there is not a hitch mounted product available for your 2009 Acura RDX that will work to transport your kayak.
There are a couple of options for carrying your kayak on the roof of your Acura if it does not have factory side rails. The first, which is what I recommend, is installing a complete roof rack to use with a roof mounted kayak carrier. For a sturdy but economical system, I suggest looking at the Rhino-Rack 2500 Roof Rack. This roof rack consists of # RRVA137B-2 for the two 54 inch long crossbars, # RRRLKVA for the 2500 Series Legs, and # DK177 for the Fit Kit. This roof rack has a weight capacity of 165 pounds.
Then for a kayak carrier, I recommend the Thule Hull-A-Port Kayak Carrier # TH834. These are J-style cradles that will let you carry one kayak of up to 36 inches wide and 75 pounds. The cradles will attach to the roof rack crossbars and feature a wide mouth for easier one person loading. It includes 2 tie-down straps with padded buckles and a set of bow/stern tie-downs for securing the kayak. I have attached a video demonstration on this carrier so you can see it in action.
There are a few other kayak carrier options such as Rhino-rack # S510 and etrailer's own # e98878.
