Transmission Cooler Recommendation # D13504 for a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.8L V8
Question:
I have a 2003 chevy silverado LS 1500 2wd 4.8 V8, i pretty sure it already has a stock transmission cooler but im worried its is not enough for tow between 5000-6000lbs in hot weather with lots of hills. Is the stock one going to work fine or do i need to add a 2nd one. If so, which transmission cooler is recommended and what all is needed for the installation. Thanks

In most cases the stock transmission cooler is adequate at best on vehicles when not pulling a trailer. If you are planning on towing 5,000-6,000 lbs you will want a transmission cooler to prolong the life of the transmission in your 2003 Chevy Silverado LS 1500 2WD with a 4.8L V8.
You will want to do some measuring to see what will fit in front of your radiator but in most cases you will want to go with the biggest transmission cooler you can fit there. If possible I would put a Derale Transmission Cooler, part # D13504. This cooler measures 11 inches in width and 12 inches in height. You will also want a Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for GM, part # D13018, so you not have to go through the hassle of cutting and flairing metal lines.
I would recommend that you run both your factory transmission cooler and the Derale Transmission Cooler, part # D13504.
I would run the output line from the factory cooler to the input of the # D13504 and then the output back to the transmission. If you route the coolers in that order you will optimize the cooling efficiency of the coolers.
