Recommended Roof Rack Options for a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo With Flush Mount Rails

Question:

We just bought a 2017 Grand Cherokee Laredo slightly used from a non-Jeep dealer. We were told all we had to do was buy crossbars, but there are no rails apparently attached to the car. There is a black strip on each side of the roof, bolted down, flush, and only about 3/4 of an inch thick up off the roof. The only things we can see on the internet like this are racks that mount straight on to the roof , horizontally, with clamps inside the windows, and not connected to those black strips at all. Everything else tells us that the rails are supposed to be factory installed with the raised ends and groove to install crossbars into. Sorry, I couldnt find the number for the rack I just looked at. Can you please explain the situation with this vehicle and how we can attach rails?

The flush mount rail options that would come on your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee are classified as either having the E Group package or not having the E Group package. If your flush mount rails have a metal strip on top of the rails then you have the E Group rails and you could install a roof rack like the Thule WingBar Evo Roof Rack which consists of the crossbars, part # TH711400 for Silver or part # TH711420 for Black, the Podium foot Pack # TH460R, and the Fit Kit # THKIT3142.

If, however, you do not have the metal strip, then you do not have the E Group package and you will need to use a roof rack option that ""clamps" on the door frame. For this you will want the WingBar Evo Bars, part # TH711500 for Silver or part # TH711520 for Black, the Rapid Traverse Foot Pack # TH480R, and the Fit Kit # THKIT1656.

I recommend going with the Thule option over other roof racks (including a factory installed roof rack) because of the superior design and materials used which make is lightweight but sturdy, and does a great job at reducing wind noise and drag. You can also lock either of these roof racks by installing the Thule One-Key System Lock Cylinders # TH450400.
